The correct answer is D. In most overhead cam engines, proper valve timing depends on the integrity of a toothed rubber belt. A broken belt allows the crankshaft to turn independently of the camshaft(s), which causes the valves and pistons to become out of phase. As a result, compression readings will be lower than normal on every cylinder. Although it is possible to have universally low compression due to burned valves, a leaking head gasket, or worn piston rings, the potential for these conditions to be the root cause of the problem is far less than a broken timing belt.
